Halloween Update

The holiday is certainly sizing up to be THE event to match this year.

Not only is the senior class throwing their usual soiree in the Villard Room from 11 to 2, but as previously mentioned other activities will accompany it this year.

We have exclusive insight into just what those activities might be.

Apparently, several dorms are participating in a campus trick-or-treating event. Chris Roellke, Dean of the College, will once again be contributing money to the residential houses to go towards buying pizza for their inhabitants. Just confirmed is an outdoor BONFIRE on Joss Beach. There will be a film screening in the college center of some spooky movie(s), as well as a costume contest (previously mentioned).

In addition to all the effort the senior class is doing, other orgs are going to be putting on some fun activities as well that weekend:

The TAs will be hosting their own outdoor Halloween party, sans alcohol, that night with baked goods, candy, and music provided by Vassar Teknowledgy. Furthermore, Raymond will of course be hosting their legendary haunted house.

Open Mic Tonight

John Wojcik '11 has emailed us with a request for publicity. We humbly oblige:

After Hours Open Mic is from 8-10pm in the Mug tonight, and performers (of all types) can start signing up at 7:45 pm in the mug for slots.

Guess that leaves out anyone who watches Grey's, huh? ;)

Cray Cray Event News

Blog9 has received word today about some interesting goings-on in the campus parties department.

First and foremost, HALLOWEEN is perhaps the most anticipated event of the semester. Rumor has it that the event this year will be only three hours, from 11pm to 2am. This is largely because the Campus Activities Office and senior class are planning a variety of events before the event (probably from 7 to 11pm) to provide an alternative to students who don't want to indulge in drunkenness. One of the confirmed events is a full-fledged costume contest with legit prizes happening in the North Atrium!

On a more subdued note, it appears that Main's annual fall event since '07 may not be happening this year. Moulin Rouge has been denied approval by the VP for Activities after what is reported to be a logistical nightmare last year. No word on whether or not more meticulous planning will avoid those nightmares this time around, or the event will be scrapped altogether. Spire bets on the latter.

UPDATE: It appears that Moulin Rouge may be on after all. We got in touch with the VP for Activities, and he maintains that it was simply a scheduling conflict that prevented Moulin Rouge from getting on the campus calendar, not issues with planning last year.

Another reason (or not?) to look forward to Grizzly Bear's performance on campus!

According to StephenieMeyer.com, the band will have a track titled "Slow Life" on the Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack!

It remains to be seen whether their song will actually be in the feature film.

It's a music video for an amazing Indian song, with fake english subtitles. I like the song itself and the guy is fuckin adorable, but if you go in expecting the english subtitles to be stupid,like I did, you're in for a pleasant surprise, as I was.

"scrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeam"..it just sounds shrill and abrasive. Like my loud sound. Goodbye, folks. Have good summers and like....don't get pregnant, catch diseases, discover your parent' hidden life as a gangster, be dumped by your significant other of five years, have your pet die, or eat fast food over the vacation. But do, however, white-water raft and dance and sing a lot. That's all you need in life to make you happy. If you feel like shit, dance and sing. and exercise. then drink yourself into a sad little bubble and sleep on it. and wear more pink and green together.

It's that time again...

Time for exams.

Last night was fun, with the midnight breakfast (I was more interested in the company than the food), the naked run (ha!), and the fire show. It was a fun time to hang out with various friends.

Needless to say, the incident in the library was frightening, and my roommate was there and came back quite shell-shocked. Here at Blog9 we sincerely hope that he will be okay, and since do not wish to propagate any rumors there will be no speculating or discussion of the incident.

On a lighter note, today I'm going to study for a while, then I have an exam from 5 to 7, then I'll have a victory dinner with some friends. Then one more exam tomorrow and I'm finished for the semester... Ahh... Otherwise, I'm looking forward to stealing my roommate's Glamour magazine to read on the quad!

The guy in the library who fell and hurt himself during primal scream will be alright. So far all I know is he is a senior and a great guy, and probably just had a very bad shoulder injury, but is conscious.

I hope that you all went to see "A Winter's Tale" this weekend. One of my best friends was in it and they were all amazing! They reminded me of how much I love Shakespeare and outdoor theatre.

Tonight there is an AirCappella/Devils concert in Rocky 200 at 8 PM and it will be fabulous!

Long Time No See... And STRESS!

This is JEWETTGOSSIP reporting... ahem!

My apologies for not posting on Blog9 for a very VERY long time! I have had a lot going on family-wise as well as academically.
But now I'm back!

I am glad to announce to you that....

In Jewett, there are people, yes people not a person staying up till 7 in the morning these days, writing papers to see the sunrise. Life during study week sucks huh? I finished 2 papers and still have 4 more and 3 exams to study for - great. Founder's Day was awesome but it really didn't help with the workload I have.

But I am real excited about this weekend. There's so many parties in various dorms tonight as well the the FARM RAVE! so excited! and it's going to go on till 6am?!? HOLY MOTHER OF COW!

I know how stressed out many of you guys are, I for one certainly am with 6 units of classes and A FREAKING CONCERT IN NYC on Monday arggggg! but take a break, go dance it out at the farm rave.

You know you need it!

Buzzing

Ah, Founder's Day stories...I was kind of depressed (cuz of weather, I have to admit) and tired in the throughout most of the day...then I took a half hour nap and GOT CRUNK. Um....everything was funny....I went to sleep...the end. But, my, those chili veggie burgers were grrreat. I told people I'd miss them next year...told one guy I never talk to I was sorry for using his water boiler without permission (it's right there in the kitchen! It's so convenient I have to take advantage. And it helped me progress through the days of putting my mug of cold, tea-bagged water in the microwave). Haha I love it. You know what I also love? Feet. Fucking love those things. I thought of putting up a picture of mine, but decided to save something for the imagination.

Everybody must get buzzed.

Pop Bottles

Oh Founder's Day. I have to say, it was definitely a success. For so much of the year it was shrouded in mystery. I knew it was a big deal, but I didn't know exactly what went on. Now, after experiencing it I have to say that I absolutely loved it. Mimosas for breakfast and screwdrivers for lunch. Just about passed out by Walker at 6. Slept till 9 then up for another round. I'd say thats pretty much the idea. Anyways, hope yours was a success too.

Fantastic Weekend

I've seriously been in the greatest mood ever all weekend. On Friday night, my friends and I had a Disney movie marathon (Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, and Aladdin) and honestly, there is nothing to put you in a good mood like watching four Disney movies in a row while eating amazing brownies (the normal kind, not the sketchy kind).

And then FOUNDER'S DAY, which absolutely lived up to what everyone told me about it. I was just in such a happy place all day, and so was everyone else I was with... and despite the fact that it was "the longest day ever" (I am agreeing with Mads on this one), and I'm still confused as to how we packed in so much activity into one day, it was absolutely lovely.

And those fireworks! They were GORGEOUS! From my vantage point, it was like they were falling on my head. It was stunning; I didn't want it to end.

Just Remember to Breathe

Ok so its a Sunday without sun and I am trying to consolidate these last few days here, packing, studying, working etc before I have to go back to the real world [?]. Not that going home is anything new for me, I have a habit of taking myself on multi-month orbits away from my family/hometown and the collisions/near misses that always take place upon those returns have so far marked the grittier, emotional turnpikes in my life. So 'woo' for heading home in 2.5 weeks for round 6.

In the meantime I am going to continue on blindly in my Vassar-d bliss and send out a kudos to Vice for an awesome Afterhours show last week, Meiko and co wove a magnificent acoustic blanket for my friday night and I really appreciated that end of week break.

So here we go, lets just all remember to breathe, and everything should be ok.

Convocation, Freshman 15, and self-exploration through paper- and song-writing

Today I had no classes. I was in the convocation choir, meaning that I had to sit through the entire convocation. The main speaker... Some interesting points, yeah, but SO long! It was pretty insane.

Sam Charner's speech was my favorite because it was the most natural. I never really like convocations because it's a bunch of educated people reading literary-sounding things.

My favorite part was singing Gaudeamus. :) And sitting next to one of my closest friends.

I went to to the freshman 15 show in UpC. It was pretty cool, though not so tremendously organized. My favorite parts were Scout's rap (fucking amazing!! mad props!) and Nina Vyedin's guitar-playing. She's really amazing and if you haven't heard her play you're really missing out. She writes her own songs that are more professional than professional ones, but she's too much of a good person inside to compare herself to others like that and be as conceited as she has the right to be.

Right now I'm (obviously) writing this post before going to sleep... I wish I didn't have to get up for an early class tomorrow because otherwise I'd be staying up late writing my fucking fascinating psych paper that I love and writing songs... I'm currently writing my first song on guitar and it's really exciting. :) The psych paper is convincing me even more that I need to be a psych major! Preferably related to abnormal and physio psych.

Dido: "i <3 u"; Aeneas: "ttyl"

I just got back from the Opera Workshop and Madrigals performance of Dido and Aeneas. In short, it was brilliant. Wonderfully sung and performed, there were a few laughs, many creative scenes, and the sad ending expected. You should definitely go see it; their last performance is tomorrow at 3 in the Skinner Recital Hall.

Getting "Lost"

yo WHAT WHAT it's Noyes' 50th tomorrow, baby! Iss gon' get MAD crunk! I'm wicked excited for Dido and Anaeas....how I love opera. oh dude fucking Lost is back! yes!

As much as I like Lost (I think it's one of the most interesting pieces of only mild-crap on tv) I really can't stand Kate's character. She's prominent on the show because she serves as the sex symbol.("dude lets give the hot sassy chick a gun and like, a love triangle and stuff") Sometimes, the only thing she does on the show is look up at Jack, bite her lip/ tilt her head/ flip her hair provocatively. It was so funny last night, it was ridiculous; the opening scene to the show was her crouching on the beach, hair waving. She pulls down her tank top strap...for no fucking reason. I think she's going to take a nudey dip or nurse a sexy scratch on her soft (armpit hair-free)sculpted shoulder or that the writers would provide at least a flimsy excuse for the action...but she like, rubs her shoulder or something and looks up at Jack and smiles sexily and Jack smiles back. I don't get it. What was the point of her pulling down her strap? It was such a blatant almost exploitation of "the hot one" that it was almost uncharacteristic of Lost. Fuck media. I mean, I'll still watch it but it will continue to disappoint me.

I forgot to mention-after the comedy show with John Mulaney last night, I was at UpC and I talked to him...I won't divulge details so as to not give away my semi-anonymity, but he was nice.

Everyone go to Julie's Restaurant cuz those people rock and give you free cookies when they're closing and you ask if they have a dessert menu.

To the Bees of the world: get the fuck out of my room. Please go kill yourself away from me. Stop making me cry.

I can't wait for the Sugarhill Gang. With such dope beats and stoopit fresh lyrics as "now what you hear is not a test--I'm rappin to the beat", and "see I am Wonder Mike and I like to say hello", no wonder they spawned one of the biggest music cultures in the home of the free. However, I have found one disturbing line in their smash hit, "Rapper's Delight": "say if your girl starts actin up, then you take her friend". The birth of all misogyny in hippity-hop today, folks? To quote my friend, "This is where we get "Tip Drill"'s from". An innocent lyric? I think not.

Improv Lyke W0ah

Seriously, the show last night was AMAZING. It's sad that this was the first Improv show I went to and it was one of the final shows of the year. I assume that they'll be having another one tonight, but unfortunately I can't go because I'll be seeing Bare (which I hear is fabulous anyway, so I have no regrets).

Last night, though, they got me laughing so hard I was crying. The show started out with name games, and moved on to alternate realities. Then they did a musical about a day in the life of Conrad Schott, complete with squeaky glasses, roll-up pants, a trip to the Met, "Oofle Doofle," and a love affair with the Pope. Finally, they finished with a compilation of weird (though hilarious) scenes involving brothers, conjoined parents, lesbians, people stuck in a well, and CatDog.

Overall, it was a great way to finish up a great day of summer (Spring? Psh. WAYYY over that).
I just cannot wait for their next show!
