ABC's "Modern Family": Good, Not Great

So I recently opened my VMail to find an invite to see the entire first episode of Modern Family, a new sitcom on ABC before it actually premieres on Wednesday night. I watched it last night.

This is your typical family ensemble-cast sitcom that focuses on three separate families. One is a big white upper-middle-class white family. One is a multiethnic family - the step-father is white, the mother Hispanic, and they take care of one pudgy little boy with an obsession with girls 5 years his senior. Finally, one is a gay couple who've just adopted a little girl from Vietnam.

The series is shot in an Office style: there's a shaky cam which follows the protagonists around, with intermittent "interviews" with them in which they speak directly to the camera.

The problem with the episode (and if it's any indicator, the series) is that everything's been done before. The fifteen-year-old who brings home the senior to watch movies on her bed with her, and the mother who panics about this. The father who tries too hard to be cool in front of his kids. The know-it-all 9-year-old. The older man with a beautiful younger wife. Heck, even the gay jokes have been done before.

And the Winner Is....

Last night was the season finale of Cycle 10 of America's Next Top Model. After a Covergirl commercial shoot, the final three were narrowed down to the final two. Fatima was eliminated, leaving Whitney and Anya to battle it out in the runway fashion show. The show was in Italy and the clothes were picked by Donatella Versace herself. The girls gave it their all but when it came time to chose the winner, Whitney was chosen. She became the show's first ever full-figured model to win.

SGPG's take: I have been a fan of Whitney since day one. Not only is she an absolutely beautiful girl, but she really does feel confident in her own skin. Most of the time, full-figured models come into the competition and eventually they loose their composure and their insecurities come through. This was never the case with Whitney and I admired her for that. However, as much as I loved her I don't think she deserved to win more than Anya. Anya was an amazing model from day one. She took gorgeous pictures and was the type of person that you just wanted to be best friends with. Although both were talented, I feel that in the end Anya was more talented. That being said, Whitney did a fantastic job also. Overall, it was a great season. And I cannot wait for Cycle 11!

A Happier Teaser

Ugh. After the teaser for S. Darko, I was afraid to post this one, but....

I haven't finished watching Volume Two, which I heard (and have seen so far) was nowhere near as good as Volume One. Volume Three: Villains looks intriguing at the very least.

Missed Season

Back home, I had my own room with my own television. I would sit there in the months of January-May and OD on American Idol.

Then came Vassar...

What happened was I became a busy mess and found very little to no time for AI. I was once the addict calling in the second the lines opened (and successfully getting through) but now...

I have only seen the auditions. As much as I'd love to cheer and vote, I've just no time.

Same for all my other major shows:
House, Degrassi, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, New Amsterdam, South of Nowhere...

I know I can watch them online, but I don't even have time for that. Even my posting here has been slacking.

At least I know everything will pay off in the end... even if I do miss 4 seasons of AI *heartache*

Is/has anyone else faced what I'm facing?

An Evening In Strong. Sex Included.

So the writers' strike is over (well, for now, and hopefully they'll all be treated better) and ABC episodes are back (yay for Grey's Anatomy and Ugly Betty and House, which is actually FOX, but whatever)! Basically this period of brand new episodes is like a week long orgasm....(ok, so maybe that was going overboard a tidbit) But REALLY! On Thursday, we were packed into the Strong MPR with hormonal young men and women, and all you could here was screaming and gasping and happy giggles and....etc.

Basically the day of Thur ended with a giant orgy in Strong. Man can those girls show you a good time or what? ;-)

Anyone see/hear about what happened to Paula last night on American Idol?
Apparently, they did judging a little differently - the top 5 all performed their songs, and the judges wrote down impressions and did a rapid-fire judging of all 5 at the end.

Paula got confused and thought one contestant actually did both his songs, when in reality they all had done only one.

ANTM Predictions

One of my favorite shows is America's Next Top Model. Every week when I realize that it is Wednesday, I get really really excited. This season has been particularly interesting. I have to say that Anya is my favorite. She is such a sweetheart. I really want her to win. And despite the fact that Dominique is hated by most people, her naivety is kind of endearing. I'm guessing I am not the only ANTM addict here at Vassar. So, I want to know predictions. Who is going home this week? What is in store for the rest of the season? Here is what I think:

Elimination this week: Whitney goes home
Next week: Dominique
The I think Fatima will get eliminated, with Katarzyna and Anya in the final runway show. And then Anya wins. :)

Getting "Lost"

yo WHAT WHAT it's Noyes' 50th tomorrow, baby! Iss gon' get MAD crunk! I'm wicked excited for Dido and Anaeas....how I love opera. oh dude fucking Lost is back! yes!

As much as I like Lost (I think it's one of the most interesting pieces of only mild-crap on tv) I really can't stand Kate's character. She's prominent on the show because she serves as the sex symbol.("dude lets give the hot sassy chick a gun and like, a love triangle and stuff") Sometimes, the only thing she does on the show is look up at Jack, bite her lip/ tilt her head/ flip her hair provocatively. It was so funny last night, it was ridiculous; the opening scene to the show was her crouching on the beach, hair waving. She pulls down her tank top strap...for no fucking reason. I think she's going to take a nudey dip or nurse a sexy scratch on her soft (armpit hair-free)sculpted shoulder or that the writers would provide at least a flimsy excuse for the action...but she like, rubs her shoulder or something and looks up at Jack and smiles sexily and Jack smiles back. I don't get it. What was the point of her pulling down her strap? It was such a blatant almost exploitation of "the hot one" that it was almost uncharacteristic of Lost. Fuck media. I mean, I'll still watch it but it will continue to disappoint me.

Watch What Happens

...Or what's NOT happening on Bravo come November.

And that's PROJECT RUNWAY.

That's right, according to What the Buck and verified by The Hollywood Reporter, the Weinstein Company, which produces the show, have just signed a deal that will move ProRun to Lifetime for the next five years, beginning with season 6. While it's good news for ProRun fans - FIVE MORE YEARS!!! - it's going to be kinda awk for guys (like me) who like to watch it, as many will recall that Lifetime's slogan is "Television for Women."

But the bad news continues: it appears that judge Nina Garcia has "resigned" from her job as fashion director of Elle magazine, though the condition of that resignation was that her contract was up for renewal, pointing to the possibility that she was in fact fired.

So this is two huge changes for one of my fave shows on TV. Nina Garcia has been with the show since its inception, and unless she gets another high-ranking fashion magazine job, my guess is that she's "out" for season 5. The show is also jumping networks, which is a questionable move on the part of the Weinsteins: Harvey believes it'll allow the show to reach its full potential.

It should be noted that NBC Universal, which owns Bravo, has filed a lawsuit claiming breach of contract. Another interesting tidbit: the Weinsteins plan to produce a new series called "Models of the Runway," which will be ProRun through the eyes of the models, launching in November of 08 along with season 6.

Oh, and season 5 starts in July. And season 6 in November. So there's like 3 seasons of Runway this year. XD

Spring Back Into TV!!

Sooo I was wracking my brain as to what to write about today, and then the answer literally presented itself before me, through my latest issue of Entertainment Weekly: Spring TV!

All of our shows have gone away for so long... What can we expect for the rest of the season? Here's what EW had to say about my fave shows:

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES
Katherine and Bree reignite their rivalry, this time after Bree posions Katherine's food. All will be made nice by the end of the season, though, as they're going to be starting their own catering business. Gabrielle finds out that Carlos's blindness is permanent, but not before he makes her promise to marry him. And Rick is back to stir things up for Lynette and Tom.

GREY'S ANATOMY
Possibly my favorite on again/off again character (besides Rose) is Ava - she'll be back for a three-episode arc. I'd just been warming up to Private Practice, but ABC decided to pull it until the fall season starts up again. Of course, this frees up Kate Walsh's schedule, leaving her available to make several cameo appearances on Grey's! I can't wait to see Addison back in her pink scrubs! The biggest news for Grey's fans is that "Meredith and McDreamy will be getting together 'for good'" according to series executive producer Shonda Rhimes.

Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy return Sunday, April 13 and Thursday, April 24, respectively on ABC.

It's Time For Some BRITcom

As you've probably heard, Britney Spears will be guest-starring in this Monday's episode of CBS's hit sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. Here are two sneak peeks at Britney's new role!

SPRiNKLES's Take: Britney looks fabulous in these clips! It looks like she's giving a really funny, awkward performance, lusting after Ted! I don't usually watch this show, but I'm going to have to catch it this week.

The Emotion of Music

This Tuesday and Wednesday I watched American Idol, after quite a long hiatus (as I last saw it in January). Brooke White's performance of "Let It Be" was beautiful, but perhaps not in the immediately obvious ways. When she started singing the song, I immediately commented that her note on "trouble" was out of pitch, and as the song progressed I noticed that the song was a bit musically sloppy in that she was a bit hoarse or off on a few notes. However what I realized soon after and understand now is that a heartfelt performance, one that does show these musical flaws and physical signs of emotion, is the best kind of performance. I downloaded the iTunes single of the song and it's very different. The voice is not emotionally strained as in the live performance, and it really makes a big difference. Sure, both have musical merits and if you go by "the books" the single is more perfected than the live. But that's just it: it shouldn't be perfect. The song should be imperfect, and in this way that emotion makes it so. We are human after all, and it's imperfection that's beautiful. I'll take my music with emotion, and its effects.



On similar note (forgive the pun), I saw Young Frankenstein, the musical, yesterday, and it was wonderful. It's all the terrific humor of the original film with witty music performed with emotion. :D

Reunion? Psh. More like a Roast.

Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. aired the reunion show of Season 4 of Project Runway!

By far the highlight of the night was not the contestants, but rather host/judge Heidi Klum, who appeared to be on.... something. There were several memorable moments instantly created when she opened her mouth.

Victorya got dug into by both Tim and Heidi, who said that she was a "bit uptight." Victorya repeatedly denied this, until Heidi just stopped short of calling her a bitch: "Well.... I think you were."

Also, Chris was made fun of horribly; an intense montage was aired showing all the times he laughed, preceded by a terrifying Chris impression by none other than Mrs. Seal herself.

A very-well-put-together segment making fun of Kevin's straightness was also aired; the best part was him telling his girlfriend that he had a lot of other girlfriends there "of the different sex.... I mean of the same sex!"

It seems that every reality show has someone who takes it a little too seriously, and season 4 of ProRun was no different: Carmen was the sore loser in this case. She complained that she didn't feel as if she was wanted after she was eliminated.... She felt hurt that "Sweet Pea said she was glad [she] was gone." Almost everyone comforted her; Sweet Pea did not. CONFIRMED.

An awesome segment featuring the wild and wacky world of Elisa was also shown, including the now-infamous "spit mark."

Finally, CHRISTIAN was declared Fan Favorite and won $10,000!!

We can't wait to see what happens next - we're rooting for Christian to win it all! He's FIERCE!! What about you??
