Just an awesome tidbit that I thought I'd share:

Exactly ten years ago today, May 2, 1998, Lord Voldemort was finally defeated by Harry Potter.

Two things:

1. J.K. Rowling stated the exact date in an documentary that aired in December on ITV, a British TV network.

2. You can figure out the year by yourself: in Chamber of Secrets, it's stated that Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday party marks the 500th anniversary of his death in 1492.

Therefore, we can deduce that the school year in book 2 is the 1992-93 school year. Therefore, book 7 takes place in what would be the 1997-98 school year.

Now you know.
