Po-Po

Two police cars and a VC security vehicle were spotted outside Lathrop at approximately 1:45 p.m. today.

Update: Rumored low-down here.

Changed Perspective

The tone of last semester was very different than the tone of this one. There was this atmosphere of stress and worry, and general anxiety about the future. But I feel so much more comfortable at Vassar than I did 4 months ago. The strange thing is, I think it had more to do with me than it did with the people or things around me. I've been doing some thinking......and..... I'm finally happy here.

Now to do laundry and work! Good luck on midterms,

A Hell of a Good Time

I went to Hell last night.

Writing that sentence makes me smile.

Good music. I was there for part of DJ Olmec's set and he seemed good, although not consistent. DJ AssLaughter was better than usual, playing the songs that we all really want, like The Way I Are, Stronger, etc. I'd have to say that I like Top 40s pop--brain says no, heart says yes :).

I was there for the first while with friends from my hall (aka my family ^_^) and then with other people later. I ran into (figuratively) some surprisingly drunk people, but they didn't cause any problems. Yay dancing! I love to dance, with people obviously but also just with my friends in our little circle.

Right now I'm comfortably drowsy, listening to Hard Days Night, and enjoying the last day of of the weekend.

I hope you all had a great weekend, and lots of luck on midterms!

Hell..... and Heaven??

Blog9 was at Heaven & Hell in full-force Saturday night!

I personally checked out Purgatory before anything, and absolutely NO ONE was there. Literally! Granted, that was at about 11:50, but still, sad....

As for Heaven, I didn't check it out at all, because
HELL was where the party was.

It got crazy around 12:30, and it was AMAZING!
DJ Asslaughter had the crowd rocking out to some awesome songs.

It seemed like everyone at Hell had a great time overall.... There were even some angels (picture) indulging in their naughty side.

To sum it up: it was a great party to end an awesome six weeks at Vassar. Can't wait for the last six!! Kudos to Main and Joss for putting on a wonderful evening!

Into the Land of the Tea Kettle

Through the slit of the half-shut shades, I can see a sort of pale, iron-colored light sifting through the windows, filling up all the spaces left uninhabited by 7am. I pull back the tangle of blankets that has made its living between my knees and throw my weight over the edge of the mattress where my warm feet thump clumsily on the cold wood, and the blood rushes to my head, and I feel my hair rise with the static as it parts with the pillow. My world is iron-colored and it spins. My bare feet pick their way through the labyrinth of dirty t-shirts and dust bunnies that dwell on last-semester's syllabi and a few scattered newspapers and my roommate's copy of As I Lay Dying until at last I reach my dresser and fumble for the orange box of DayQuil. Finding it, I drink it down with cold Chamomile tea from last night, then put the kettle on to boil, intending to make myself some Udon soup from UpC, reach for my philosophy reading on my night table, but instead fall asleep as soon as cheek meets pillow, finger still stuck in between the pages.

Lonely Nights at the Mug

I had a kick-ass time at the FlyPeople Mug Night last night. While I was there, however, I noticed that an awful lot of girls were dancing solo by the walls, waiting for someone to approach them. And no one did! It made me think, either I'm just beginning to notice the effects of a skewed gender ratio or for some reason a large portion of the guys just didn't bother going to dance. I put more stake into the latter explanation, and therefore pose these questions for the guys reading this: Where were you? What were you doing that was so important that you left a bunch of girls waiting in anticipation, only to be left disappointed?

The Laughing. It's What It's All About.

I forgot how great weekend nights can be. See, last weekend I was sickly so I mostly stayed in. And I was like, “whatever, it’s fine, I need rest and I don’t have that much fun when I go out anyways.” Except I really do. Last night my friend’s friends were visiting and they were awesome. We went out to dinner, hung out in our friend’s room, and went to the Mug. And it was great. The Mug is so much better when you’re not worried about finding a guy (or girl) to grind all up against. You can just have fun with your friends and dance like a total fool. And laugh together about all the sketchy hookups. Because that’s really what it’s all about, let’s be honest. The laughing, not the hookups.

So I’m being pretty obvious, saying that weekend nights are awesome. But I had forgotten how much fun I could have just being stupid with my friends in our rooms and at the Mug. And now I’m exhausted and have a ton of work to do, but isn’t part of college all about friends? I’m really reveling in that part. The work, not so much.

And with that lovely stream of consciousness, I’m out! Enjoy the rest of your weekend. I’ll see you at Heaven and Hell!

Love,
Peabo

A Collective Response

Reading the responses to the last post reminded me of just how polarizing and dehumanizing political beliefs can be. We seem to all too quickly abandon any rational faith in people to ensure that our own ‘beliefs’ are not infringed upon. I think it explains why so little significant change ever comes from politics. The forfeiting of trust in the humanity of an individual for the sake of dogmatic political adherence divides you not just from the individual you disagree with, but from all others who may not share your human experience.

The words ‘imbecile’ and ‘infantile’ were used to describe the views of this blogger. I feel they managed to also capture perfectly the insults, personal attacks, and closeting of those who responded to vlwg's post. To react to another’s political beliefs with the conviction that they “hope to never meet” the individual who wrote that post in person confirmed to me not only the overwhelming political immaturity on this campus [and off] but the narrow-minded, equally confrontational and dogmatic outlook of whoever wrote that response. Likewise, the words imbecile and infantile captured perfectly those who not only pigeon-holed both themselves and the assumed political and social beliefs of people written off as middle or upper class, but even more so those who so quickly jumped to accusations of racism based on conclusions based on assumption rather than fact.

It is disappointing to read a ‘debate’ over the political beliefs of an individual that so quickly dissolves to not an attempt to understand another, but to quickly dismiss, discredit, and disrespect the value of that person. For young people granted with the most powerful vote in the entire world, I truly hope you all eventually move beyond the polarizing comfort of anonymity provided by your polarized political system and take the uncomfortable step beyond combatant rejection. Because this right now is little more than a shoving match.

I am not defending vivalawhitegirl's beliefs. I am not discrediting the beliefs of those who were obviously offended by vlwg's post. I am appealing to both sides to question what they believe in, why they believe it, and to question what they really know about their country’s impact on this world. Iraq is the last thing you need to be worrying about. It is this conflict at home that will be the preventer of peace.
