I'm Going to Miss This

Today, I decided to take all my pictures off my wall. It looks really sad. While putting them away, I found notes that we had all written to each other after a play I was in senior year. I just finished reading them. I feel like I’ve changed a lot from the person they describe, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s in good or bad ways. I think a little bit of both. I’m glad to be going home soon, because I want to return somewhat to the me in those notes. Not that I’ll loose what Vassar has added, of course. Especially all the amazing people who have helped me through.

Whenever I think of how soon I’m going home, I get really excited. But then I remember I have to pack, clean, take an exam, and say goodbye to everyone. That makes me a little less excited. But I did steal a tray (with trayfitti) from the DC to preserve it for next year! And to go traying.

I know you will all have amazing summers, but aren’t we all going to miss this? If you need more proof, just look at that picture. I can’t wait to see you all again next year!

Intriguing....

There seems to be an awful lot of shit going down right now in my life, the lives of those close to me, and the whole Vassar community. And those three are unrelated. But still, crazy. And all right before exams, so not very conducive towards studying.

For those interested in the Vassar community drama, there's a very interesting comment war going on at Mads. I recommend checking it out. That's what I've been doing instead of studying for my astronomy final...

Good luck to all of you with all your various endeavors.

Oy Vey

Done with classes! Everyone is kind of winding down, chilling out, even partying it up. I still have work to do. It's my own fault because I put it off, but I still have to do it. How many of you get to chill out for a while, and how many of you have to keep right on trucking? Kinda sucks, right? But the finish line is in sight. Just one more big sprint and we're there! Trouble is, I've always sucked at running.

Godspeed!

"Ladylike"

I’m actually really excited to be staying in tonight. This past week has been hellish, with many nights of 3 or less hours of sleep. I feel like a zombie. But tonight, I’m going to eat a good dinner, go to the limit show, watch Gosford Park, and sleep. I am so excited for the sleep. And then I get to wake up early on Founder’s Day! Have any of you read the story of the origins of Founder’s Day? It’s actually really sweet. The college threw a surprise party for Matthew Vassar on that day, and he was so touched, it was cute. I love stories like that. Although there’s the little sidebar notice that the girls were instructed to wave their handkerchiefs silently because cheering wasn’t “ladylike.” I hate that word. Last night, one of my friends told me that her first impression of me was prim and proper. I laughed so hard that I snorted. Charming, right?

Good luck with the end of classes, and have a very happy founder’s day!

Drowning!

I have a paper due in 26 hours. 8 pages, worth a third of my grade, in my future major. And I have a paragraph. Yet all I can think about is room draw. And I think I'm getting sick. But I flat out just do not have time to go to Baldwin. And I refuse to be sick for Founder's Day. So I'll just have to cope. I'm hearty, right? I'll be fine. Assuming I don't fail this damn paper.

I'm sure many of you are in similar situations. Good luck, to you and to me. May nobody's brain explode this lovely rainy day.

PSA

My friend just called me very upset. Her laptop just got stolen, along with her roomate's. Their door wasn't locked, as it usually isn't, so someone must have just wandered in and taken them. Turns out someone else in their dorm had the same thing happen (but didn't say anything), so it isn't an entirely isolated thing.

So she wanted me to post about this and I was only to happy to oblige. People, if you have stuff stolen, say something! And it's probably wise to lock your doors. Security sends around a lot of reminders, but not very many people seem to listen. I know I usually don't because I think it's safe. But 3 computers in a couple days, even for the whole campus, is nothing to be scoffed at.

And that is my own little PSA. Be careful guys! And please don't be that jackass who takes other people's stuff.

Exploration Nation

I love exploring this campus. I always find something new. Like today, when I needed to get something signed by the art department to get credit for a class over the summer. I'd never been in Taylor before. It's amazing! Might even be the most beautiful building on campus, and that's saying a lot. There were these amazing cathedral doors just chilling out on one of the staircases. My mouth literally dropped open when I saw them. But hey, I'm a geek like that. Then in the library, I found new bathrooms. Right down the first staircases inside. They are cool bathrooms. I know that none of this is anything close to secret, but it's always fun to find new little nooks around Vassar campus. We have so many and they are often so gorgeous.

Also, the seniors were outside Swift during my history class, celebrating with champagne because their theses were due today. It made me happy. That'll be me in 3 years! Scary and exhilarating all at once.

Then, after exploring, I came back to my room and took a nap. Naps are awesome. They make everything better.

Yeah, that's about it.

Jeffrey Sachs Coming to Vassar

New York Times best selling author, United Nations advisor and renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs will discuss the rise of global poverty. Thursday, April 24th at 6 pm in the Chapel.

Peabo’s Take: This is awesome! I just recently learned who Jeffrey Sachs is and, for those of you who don’t know, he’s an economist who basically spends his life promoting economic development to help combat poverty. He’s also a huge advocate for working on economic development and environmental stability hand in hand, which is truly badass. That’s a rather insignifigant description; so you should all look him up because he’s pretty awesome. And he’s coming to Vassar! Operation Donation managed to finagle it, so they are clearly fantastic. I hope I see you all there, six o’clock next Thursday!

I have a prospie tomorrow and I am totally using this as evidence for why she should come to Vassar.

I'll Pass On the Spandex

I was born in the wrong decade.

I hate the modern gym culture. The “attractive” girl of nowadays is the one with a body that can only be achieved through hours and hours of working out. I feel like I’m supposed to like working out, that it’s something I should want to do. It is not something I ever want to do. At all. But then I can never truly be “hot,” and that frustrates me to no end.

The feminist in me hates that I need to look a certain way for society to deem me attractive. But the sad, lonely little girl in me desperately wishes that I did. I wish I lived in a time where I could be hot for how I naturally look, without hours spent altering that appearance. I am healthy, so why should I have to go to a gym to change my abs say, or my butt? What’s wrong with my butt? I don’t know if any of you have experience similar frustration. It’s annoying. But I’m coming to terms with how I look more and more. Which is, if I may be so bold, not entirely terrible. Just lacking the oh-so-desired muscle tone.

Also, I might be a freak, but I really didn’t have that much fun at MIA. It might have been because I got knocked over and stepped on though….The before was much more fun.

I hope you all have an amazing rest of your weekend! I plan to!

I Dream of Weekend

I have so much to do my brain feels like it’s melting. But I’ve also just been kinda sad lately. I’m not getting the summer job I really wanted, doing badly in one of my classes, and feeling bummed out about the whole romance thing. I just spent a whole weekend with friends all interested in someone. “Sure, she’s perfect. I’ll just go sit in the corner while you gaze longingly at your temptress of choice. Have fun!” Not exactly confidence building, is it?

It’s really frustrating to not have time to be upset. And I don’t. I want to just curl up in my bed and wallow in some self-loathing. But instead I have to write a paper, which is truly lame.

The only upside is that this weekend is going to be AWESOME! My friend’s friends are coming into town and I love them. And I’ll be done with most of my work by then. Also, for anyone else who is counting down the days, The Office comes back Thursday! We get to see Jim and Pam again! That’ll keep me going.

Lord, beer me strength.

Frozen Banana Salesman

This weekend was a bit bizarre. I feel like my brain is all fuzzy, and it’s been like that for a while now. It’s annoying. I want my mind back please and thank you. But it seems determined to elude me. So instead of working, I am watching Arrested Development, my latest in a long line of television addictions. I also took an amazing nap today. Naps can really make everything better. Except when you wake up and realize how much you still have to do. And with all that work, I somehow manage to worry about the complete wrong things. Instead of working on my homework due tomorrow, I’m concerned about my summer job, the classes I want to take next semester, and the health of my cat. Productive, right? But that’s what happens when I’m stressed; I avoid the cause. Which is a really terrible way to cope. But hey, procrastination is what I do best. Back to the banana stand…. (Arrested Development fans know what I mean. I think).

So... Um... How's Laos?

I have too many thoughts going through my head. But I thought I would just share a little vignette and some provoking questions. Excited? You should be.

My friend asked me the today what was new in my life. I didn’t really have an answer, which was thoroughly depressing. The asker was one of my closest friends from home who is currently adventuring on her own through Southeast Asia for three months, with no program, travel companion, or knowledge of the languages. My papers and awkward interactions seem insignificant in comparison. So all I could say was “nothing really. How’s Laos?” I love college and am so happy here. But sometimes all it takes is someone braver, different, and more adventurous to make me doubt. It’s like my dilemma with study-abroad (yes, I am only a freshman and it’s a bit early but shhh). I feel like I should go somewhere adventurous and unknown to me, or at least somewhere where I can learn another language. But all I really want to do is go to Scotland and study next to castles. I feel guilty for not wanting to push myself. Maybe I’m just not as brave as her. Is that such a horrible thing? Can we all be grand adventurers? And if we can, should we?

She said Laos is great, in case any of you were wondering.

Incoherent (as always),

Home is Where the Bed Is

I’m home! It is really wonderful. Long drive home, but somewhat scenic, which was nice. We also discovered that Super 8 motels provide free internet. Useful, right?

I got home yesterday evening, with two of my lovely Lathrop friends, one of whom is staying with me. It’s really werid to see your college friends in your house. But also really nice A mixing of your different worlds.

I have now slept for 13 hours. Proof at just how much midterms wore me out. Are any of you home? Do you enjoy snuggling up in your bed for more than half a day? I know I do! I don’t have much else to add, because all I’ve done is sleep….not that I’m complaining!

I hope you all have a fantastic break. See you in 2 weeks! But I will keep you posted on my oh-so exciting home life, never fear.

The Laughing. It's What It's All About.

I forgot how great weekend nights can be. See, last weekend I was sickly so I mostly stayed in. And I was like, “whatever, it’s fine, I need rest and I don’t have that much fun when I go out anyways.” Except I really do. Last night my friend’s friends were visiting and they were awesome. We went out to dinner, hung out in our friend’s room, and went to the Mug. And it was great. The Mug is so much better when you’re not worried about finding a guy (or girl) to grind all up against. You can just have fun with your friends and dance like a total fool. And laugh together about all the sketchy hookups. Because that’s really what it’s all about, let’s be honest. The laughing, not the hookups.

So I’m being pretty obvious, saying that weekend nights are awesome. But I had forgotten how much fun I could have just being stupid with my friends in our rooms and at the Mug. And now I’m exhausted and have a ton of work to do, but isn’t part of college all about friends? I’m really reveling in that part. The work, not so much.

And with that lovely stream of consciousness, I’m out! Enjoy the rest of your weekend. I’ll see you at Heaven and Hell!

Love,
Peabo

Preschoolers Unite!

Sorry to disappoint, but I have no good stories to share this morning. I am pretty sick, so last night I just hung out with some friends and turned in early. Instead of attempting to make that sound interesting, I thought I would share this list:

Top 10 ways that college is like preschool:
1) naptime makes a triumphant comeback
2) tickle fights are common
3) macaroni is a staple food (preferably of the e-z variety)
4) personal bubbles do not exist
5) neither does modesty (there are only so many times you can try to change in the closet)
6) puddle-jumping and snow-frolicking are legitimate sources of entertainment
7) personal grooming is far from a priority
8) you are almost expected to exist in squalor
9) any and all illnesses spread like wildfire
10) bathroom time is not necessarily private time

You know it’s true.

I hope you all had deliciously dramatic Friday nights, and I promise I’ll have stories next weekend!
Also, how gorgeous is Vassar in the snow?
